Exhibit brochure (pdf)

Mary Ylvisaker Nilsen and Kristi Ylvisaker The evocative work of sisters Mary Ylvisaker Nilsen and Kristi Ylvisaker will be on display starting March 18 in the Chapel. "Nude Truths," visually inspired by the powerful poetry of Denise Levertov, Kristi explores Levertov's "descent into and through the dark night of the soul" while Mary provides descriptions underneath each work spun off from Levertov's poetic imagery. Collaborating from opposite sides of the world—Kristi in her studio in Norway and Mary in Des Moines, Iowa—the two sisters reunited in the USA in 2004 to finish the project.

Of the exhibit, the sisters say, "Each painting in the series of 24 works is 32" tall and 23" wide. The colors in the cycle move from white and light creams through dense, dark colors and out into ethereal blues and cool lights. Similarly, the thought progression of prose and poetry moves from innocence to awe and in between struggles with the illusive quality of peace in our world The intensity of color combined with tight and powerful thoughts inspires viewers to explore their own unique responses, continuing the flow of creative energy."

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Sunday, March 18, with special guest Mary Nilsen, who will talk about her creative process. The exhibit will be available for viewing on Sundays before and after church and during the week by appointment. Prints of the works in the exhibit are available for purchase throughout the exhibit's run, which is March 18 - May 30.
