Advent-Epiphany exhibit featuring works by Alejandra Vernon

Visual Arts presents "Advent-Epiphany"
The current exhibit in the Chapel is "Advent-Epiphany." The show features five mixed media pieces by Alejandra Vernon, and various artists in study with p:ear (education, art, recreation). The show runs December 12 through January 23. Chapel gallery hours are Sundays after worship and by appointment during the week.

Alejandra Vernon is a resident of Long Beach, California and a member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. Her early childhood experiences in Ecuador, Argentina and Jamaica continue to influence her work. She's listed in Who's Who in America 2004 and shows her work in several prestigious galleries throughout the United States. Her creations have graced the covers of books and magazines, as well as an inspirational depiction of Mary on the April 2004 cover of Presbyterians Today.

Ms. Vernon's pieces are mixed media collages that depict her visualizations in a melding of vibrant colors and forms. The collages are papers, enhanced with a variety of watercolor, gouache, colored pencils, pens, and finally covered with several layers of a mixture of matte and medium gloss water-based varnish for protection and texture. The final results are spectacular.

Portland's homeless youth find community and encouragement through art and education at p:ear. Mentors provide educational, artistic and recreational opportunities that affirm personal worth and help youth create more meaningful and healthy lives. A permanent gallery for p:ear is located at 809 SW Alder. The gallery is open every First Thursday, except January, from 6-9 p.m.
