Stewardship at First Presbyterian Church

Community Outreach blessings

Stewardship 2008 Do you count your blessings every day when you enjoy a hot shower and your first cup of day coffee in the morning? Since July, the Julia West House has been open early in the morning Monday through Saturday. DayWatch provides hot showers, coffee, snacks, and a warm place to sit for Portland's homeless. The second-floor Workshops offer classes in computer training, G.E.D. prep, Ready-2-Rent, anger management, and many more subjects. Each day we serve between 150 and 250 low-income and homeless residents of downtown Portland. At night, Operation Nightwatch uses the Julia West House for their programs including an evening drop-in center three nights a week, Sunday evening worship service, Wednesday night Bible study, and other weekly events. These programs offer a non-violent atmosphere of friendship and hospitality for our street friends who struggle with addictions, mental illness and loneliness. At Julia West they find a safe refuge from the streets – a place to be – where every person is welcomed as a child of God. These three programs are not offered by any other organization. First Presbyterian Church can truly be proud of doing God's work right here in our community. This work is recognized and supported by Mayor Tom Potter, who visited Julia West in mid-August. Funding for additional staff for the DayWatch program is provided through the Mayor's SAFE (Street Access for Everyone) initiative, to keep Julia West House open for extended hours. We need to continue our commitment to this very important work which alters peoples' lives through positive action. These and many others in need are counting on our blessings in the form of new pledges and increased pledges from you in 2008!
