Stewardship at First Presbyterian Church

Progams supported by FPC through our stewardship

Stewardship 2008 Part of First Presbyterian Church's mission statement affirms that "We minister to the community at our doorstep, the nation and the world. Through worship, education, fellowship, mission outreach and the promotion of social justice, we witness to the power of God’s redemptive grace." Counting on our blessings. In this stewardship article, we will focus on mission, and as you prayerfully consider your part in our 2008 stewardship campaign, we want to remind you that our operating budget supports a variety of local and global mission programs, thus allowing God's blessings to flow through us to others, both here and around the world.

Local

Daywatch – Six days a week at the Julia West House, we provide the blessings of hospitality, fellowship, coffee, and snacks to more than 200 homeless and low-income residents of downtown Portland. Most days we are open from 6:10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We provide over 80 showers each week.

Julia West House Workshops – Five days a week we offer classes and workshops for homeless and low-income guests. We conduct 80 to 100 workshop sessions each month. Courses include literacy classes, GED preparation, computer training, creative writing, Ready-to-Rent, open computer lab, art classes, and more. The Pearl District Toastmasters club also meets at Julia West.

Emergency Foodbox Program – Three days a week we serve downtown residents in need of food. Food comes from the Oregon Food Bank and church donations. We provide over 150 emergency food boxes each month.

Friendly House – This private, non-profit social service agency was founded by FPC more than 80 years ago. Based on the philosophy of "neighbor helping neighbor" and serving all members of our community, Friendly House provides a preschool, Friendly Chaps, emergency services, a community center and a senior center.

Operation Nightwatch – This ecumenical ministry offers the blessing of a non-violent atmosphere for friendship and community for our street friends.

Global

Seafarers – Through this program, we provide a variety of services to foreign sailors, including reading materials, counseling, companionship, and facilities for communication with sailors' families.

India/Bharati Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS) – This mission allows FPC to support programs for Dalits (the untouchables) of India. Blessings that we are able to pass on include medicine and other medical aid, legal aid, education, and well-drilling.

Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you, and make your name great so that you will be a blessing." Genesis 12:1-2
