Women’s Ministries
All women who are members of First Presbyterian Church are automatically members of Presbyterian Women’s Ministries, which is part of the larger national organization Presbyterian Women, affiliated with PCUSA. You are welcome to participate in the many activities throughout the year that our chapter offers.
PWM Purpose
Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, we commit ourselves to:
- Nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study
- Support the mission of the church worldwide in its efforts to assist women
- Work for justice and peace, especially for women and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
- Further, we commit ourselves to serve and support through prayer the members of our community of faith at First Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon.
PWM Service Groups
We invite you to explore the following PMW fellowship groups to find one that fits your schedule and interests. Childcare is provided at meeting times for most of these groups. Call the church office at 503-228-7331 for more information.
- Open Circle
Open Circle is a loving, searching, praying community of women of all ages who want to deepen their relationship with God through Bible study, prayer, and discussion. This group meets Thursdays at the church from September through the middle of June from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
- Tuesday Evening Women’s Group
This group meets at a near by restaurant the first Tuesday of each month to share dinner and return to the church for lively discussion of religious books and current topics.
- Mystery Book Club
The Mystery Book Club meets at the church the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. to explore the work of mystery writers.
- Quilters Group
First Presbyterian Quilters started as the Sewing Group in 1862. Today, this intergenerational group with members ranging in age from 20s to 80s meets Friday mornings in the Parish House Study.
Presbyterian Women’s Ministries reaches out to others through:
- Prayer Partners
Prayer Partners began as an outgrowth of Open Circle combined with the Women’s Prayer Chain. Through one-on-one partnerships, we support each other in faith by praying with and for each other.
- Women of Cheer
PWM formed Women of Cheer in 2004 for the purpose of sending greetings, congratulations, notes of encouragement, get well messages, and condolence cards to women of First Presbyterian Church. This activity is perfect for women who are unable to attend meetings.
- Mom’s Angels
Since 2004, PWM has assigned Mom’s Angels to nurture each new mother and baby in our congregation for a three-month period with a note, flower, small gift, or phone call.
- Linen Ladies and Silver Stewards
Linen Ladies and Silver Stewards lovingly care for the four silver tea services and linens owned by the church.
