Mission Statement

The mission of the music and performing arts ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Portland is to advance the Great Ends of the Church, particularly the maintenance of divine worship, the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world and the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind. To promote this mission, we support the following principles and policies:
  1. Music provides an integral part of the worship experience. Appropriate ways of using music in worship include the singing of hymns, anthems, oratorios and cantatas, and the playing of instrumental music. Music supports the many seasons of the liturgical year such as Advent and Lent, the sacraments of baptism and communion, and special services such as weddings and memorial services. Music may serve as presentations and interpretation of Scripture, as response to the gospel, and as prayer, through psalms and canticles, hymns and anthems, spirituals and spiritual songs

  2. One of the duties of a Christian community is to provide nurture for its members through all of life and its transitions. The music ministry advances this goal by making possible the education necessary for all to participate in worship experiences through the medium of music and the other performing arts. We serve the children and adults of our congregation and the community by providing music education, including a wide range of choral programs for all ages and the use of our facilities to teach organ, piano and other instruments, and by designing arts programs that will draw children and students of all ages into the life of the church through opportunities to participate in worship.

  3. We reach out to the community and include them in the life of the church in order to further exhibit the Kingdom of Heaven to the world, and to proclaim the gospel for the salvation of humankind. We welcome the community into the church by hosting appropriate musical and other arts performances that encourage, continue and support the tradition of sacred music that has long been associated with the church, and by offering the appropriate use of our facilities to secular community arts groups to support the programs and mission of the church.
