Celebration Works to Feature "Courtship Songs"The 2007-08 season of our concert series, Celebration Works, continues on Sunday, November 18th at 3:00 pm with a concert by pianist Cary Lewis and cellist Dorothy Lewis. In addition to playing together as a piano/cello duo, the pair is also married to each other. Joining the Lewises are Oregon Symphony principals David Buck, flute, and Martin Hebert, oboe. Mr. Buck and Mr. Hebert are both fairly new to Portland, having joined the OSO within the last couple of years. The musicians have planned a program based on the theme of courtship. The theme was suggested by the title of the Stephen Paulus work which is the centerpiece of the program, "Courtship Songs," and the only piece on which all four are playing together. It was written for a prominent couple who support the arts in Minneapolis in honor of their 15th wedding anniversary and each movement is intended to symbolize a stage through which a loving relationship may pass. Also on the program are Trio Serenade for Oboe, Cello and Piano by Robert Kahn (and serenades are by definition songs of courtship); Plaints and Airs by Maurice Wright, which includes a movement titled "The Reluctant Suitor;" Trio for Flute, Oboe and Piano by Madeline Dring, which features a luscious and sensuous slow movement; and Trio in A for Flute, Oboe and Piano by Franz Reizenstein, which includes a movement based on the popular song "Daisy, Daisy, Give Me Your Answer, Do." The afternoon promises to be one of musical discovery and delight. Tickets for the concert are sold at the door. General admission is $10; students and seniors are $8. Parking in our underground garage is available for no charge.
