An exciting afternoon of music and dance is on tap for Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Virtuoso flutist Tessa Brinckman and East West Continuo, an ensemble dedicated to exploring and promoting both eastern and western music, including traditional and hybrid material, will perform on our Celebration Works recital series. This group has been in the forefront in commissioning new works as well as reviving old ones. East West Continuo includes Ms. Brinckman on flute, Daniel Rouslin on violin, Victoria Gunn Pich on viola, Lori Presthus on cello, Jenny Lindner on harp and Mitsuki Dazai on koto (a traditional Japanese harp). Joining the musicians will be the Agnieszka Laska Dancers, who will be dancing original choreography by Agnieszka Laska on three of the pieces to be presented.
The program includes: Through a Gentle Rain, by Jack Gabel, based on Japanese haiku and performed by flute and koto (a type of traditional Japanese harp); Trio for Flute, Violin and Viola, by Quincy Porter; five movements from Pictures of Miró, by Mark Fish, inspired by the paintings of the Spanish artist Joan Miró; Narthex, by Bernard Andres, which musically depicts scenes carved on the narthex of a French cathedral; Serenade in G Major, by Max Reger, for flute, violin and viola; and Cloven Dreams, by D'Arcy Reynolds, a work inspired by the art/architecture of Helen Martins and performed by flute, violin, viola and cello.
Tessa Brinckman and East West Continuo have just released their new CD, Glass Sky, which will be on sale at the concert.
