A Legacy of Faith
A presentation by Dr. J. Dudley Weaver
March 2005

Dr. J. Dudley Weaver, pastor and head of staff at First Presbyterian Church, gave a presentation on his book, A Legacy of Faith: First Presbyterian Church, 1854-2004. Dr. Weaver highlighted several of the key figures in the development of FPC, many of whom also had prominent roles in the early days of Portland itself. Drawing on church records, letters, anecdotes, and other primary sources, he provided a lively portrait of FPC's history.

A Legacy of Faith is available for purchase through the church office. The book tells the story of the history of our congregation from its beginning in the home of William and Sarah Abrams to the present. First Church member Beverly Butterworth writes: "Thoroughly researched and skillfully written . . . history of First Presbyterian Church. Minutes of meetings give readers a chance to follow the thread of belief and zeal, mission and challenges, since its founding in 1854. Beyond the official writings of the church, there is a wealth of names and snippets about people who have cared for its congregation. Many of the early names now grace the street signs in the city of Portland. More recent names still sit among us." The cost of the book is $29.95. A portion of the proceeds from the book will be used to maintain the historical archives of First Church.
