Deacons

The role of the Deacon is set forth in the New Testament as one of empathy, witness and service, following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The first responsibility of a Deacon, as we read in the Presbyterian constitution, The Book of Order is:
--"to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress."

The Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church is an elected and ordained body of members, who serve in collaboration with the session and the pastoral staff to fulfill the ministry of reconciliation and care within the fellowship of our church.

The Deacons serve in a variety of ways:

  • Memorial Services: Deacons set up and serve a collation for those attending Memorial Services, at the conclusion of the Service in the Chapel Narthex or downstairs in Geneva Hall.
  • Calling: Many Deacons visit elderly and homebound members on a regular, monthly basis and help "get the window open" for our older members. Important caring relationships become part of the fabric of Christian care and advocacy that families rely upon as parents and spouses enter later stages of life.
  • Health Ministry Team: With the ongoing support of the Deacons, the Health Ministry Team provides a plethora of health-related educational events and seminars. There is a yearly Flu Shot Clinic and occasional classes in CPR and AED training.
  • All-Church Canvas: Once a year, during the season of Lent, the Board of Deacons telephone every local member of the church with a message of love and concern. The purpose is to let each individual and household know the church continues to care about them! Follow up with particular concerns is directed to our pastoral staff.
  • Assistance in Fellowship: The Board of Deacons routinely serves the church lunch at various all-church events, including the Annual Meeting, occasional Congregational Concerns luncheons, and the traditional Advent Lunch and Carol Sing.
  • Works of love: Deacons send cards, deliver meals, offer transportation as needed and occasional help in moving people/families in need of this kind of support in a transitional season of life.
